After the devastating Los Angeles fires of 2025, I began collecting charcoal from burned trees in Altadena— especially from spots that hold special memories for me. Altadena, a designated "Tree City," is a place where the precious canopies and nature diversity have long been treasured. I felt a need to find a way to give our 100 year-old trees new life… to preserve them along with the memories that they hold. I also found creating art especially healing during a time when there was so much trauma all around. We lost so much so quickly. I'm so grateful for the very resilient and creative community I'm surrounded by, who work each day to bring new life and love to what was lost, and a new future to our treasured community. I'm grateful for art and the effect it has on healing us. I'm grateful for these pieces in "Ember & Light" where a bit of Altadena charcoal lives on in each one.
Using natural materials such as limestone, sand, handmade paper, burlap, acrylic, pastels, and charcoal, these textured landscapes and abstract works reflect strength and renewal. Some pieces resemble rock, stone, or marble-- symbols of resilience. Not a return to what was, but the building of a stronger foundation, both within ourselves and in our recovering cities. We are all building a brand new foundation on which to stand on every single day.
While these pieces contain traces of destruction, my hope is that these works will bring calm, optimism, and a reminder that beauty can rise from what once was lost.
